With a collective of Austin’s best street artists organized by large-scale urban painter J Muzacz, Austin’s Southside Flying Pizza restaurant group have partnered to create new outdoor works of art on a sprawling 800 square foot surface at Southside Flying Pizza’s South Congress Avenue location, on Sunday, May 20th featuring the work of the artists as well as students from the Texas School for the Deaf.

Southside Flying Pizza is Austin’s favorite for pizza made from scratch, with a delicious “not-too-thick and not-too-thin” crust, a myriad of toppings, and award winning fresh salads. There are four locations for your convenience, on South Congress, South Lamar, East Cesar Chavez and South Manchaca.

J Muzacz is well-known for his iconic stained-glass style murals, viewable to the public on the back wall at Encore Records downtown, La Virgen behind Emo’s, and the Grackle at the Dougherty Arts Center to name just a few. Muzacz is a member of both the SprATX and HOPE Artists collectives, thus having a strong network with many of Austin’s most prominent and prolific street artists.

With this crew of diverse styles, Southside Flying Pizza is hoping to cover an 800 square foot fence that runs alongside South Congress Avenue, with classic vintage Austin weirdness, in a single day.

The modern take on Austin’s mid-century history from hippiedom to mod culture, hot rods, politics and everything in between, depicted through the eyes and styles of so many artists from different backgrounds, and applying the spray paint medium and various street art techniques, the result should be dynamic and eye-catching to say the least. The cultural relevance to Austin’s SoCo history is a theme throughout, though how that will be shown visually is yet to be seen. Only the artists know what to expect, and even then, with a collaboration of this scale, who knows what will happen.
